Abstract The fourth edition of the International Code of Phytosociological Nomenclature (ICPN) was prepared by the Steering Committee of the IAVS Working Group for Phytosociological Nomenclature (GPN). The edition consists of 14 Definitions, 7 Principles, 53 Articles, and 7 Appendices. When compared with the previous edition, the main amendments are: (a) the acceptance of electronic publications (Art. 1); (b) the introduction of binding decisions (Definition XIV, Principle II, Articles 1, 2b, 3c, 29b, 40, 42, 44, Appendices 6 and 7); (c) the mandatory use of the English or Latin terminology for syntaxonomic novelties (Definition II, Principle II, Articles 3d and 3i); (d) the introduction of autonyms for the main ranks when the corresponding secondary ranks are created (Articles 13b and 24); (e) the automatic correction of the taxon names (name‐giving taxa) used in the names of syntaxa in accordance with the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN) (Article 44); (f) the possibility to mutate the name of a syntaxon in using other correct, alternative names for the name‐giving taxa (Article 45); (g) the introduction of inadequate names, a new category of rejected names (Definition V, Articles 43 through 45); and (h) the introduction of a conserved type (Definition XIII, Article 53). The fourth edition of ICPN was approved by the GPN on 25 May 2019 and becomes effectively binding on 1 January 2021.

Abstract Question: Collaborative research efforts and synthetic vegetation analyses are often limited by difficulties in sharing or combining datasets. Can we facilitate these activities by means of an exchange standard for plot‐based vegetation data? Methods: In 2003, the Ecoinformatics Working Group and the Council of the International Association for Vegetation Science endorsed the development of a standard exchange schema for vegetation‐plot data. In 2007, a first workshop was held to formulate a common set of goals, concepts, and terminology for plot‐based vegetation data. At a second workshop in 2008, this ontology was developed into an XML (extensible markup language) schema representation designed to be maximally compatible with existing standards and databases. Results: The exchange standard for plot‐based vegetation data (Veg‐X) allows for observations of vegetation at both individual plant and aggregated observation levels. It ensures that observations are fixed to physical sample plots at specific points in space and time, and makes a distinction between the entity of interest (e.g. an individual tree) and the observational act (i.e. a measurement). The standard supports repeated measurements of both individual organisms and plots, allows observations of entities to be grouped following predefined or user‐defined criteria, and ensures that the connection between the entity observed and taxonomic concept associated with that observation are maintained. Conclusions: Establishment of exchange standards followed by development of ecoinformatics tools built around those standards should allow scientists to efficiently combine plot data over extensive spatial and temporal gradients in order to perform analyses and make predictions of vegetation change and dynamics at local and global scales.

This study presents the results of a floristic vegetational study on Robinia pseudoacacia neoformation forests in the peri-Adriatic sector of central Italy. This has allowed the characterization of these coenoses at the ecological, biogeographic, syntaxonomic and landscape levels. These currently represent the southernmost syntaxa of the Robinietea class described for the Italian peninsula, and the first syntaxonomic contribution of this class in Europe for the Mediterranean biogeographical region. We propose here the new alliance Lauro nobilis–Robinion pseudoacaciae of the order Chelidonio–Robinietalia pseudoacaciae and class Robinietea, with two new associations: Melisso altissimae–Robinietum pseudoacaciae and Rubio peregrinae–Robinietum pseudoacaciae. The new alliance Lauro nobilis–Robinion pseudoacaciae (typus: Melisso altissimae–Robinietum pseudoacaciae) brings together neoformation forests and pre-forest dominated by R. pseudoacacia in those territories with a Mediterranean macroclimate of the peri-Adriatic sector of central Italy. The optimum is found for the alluvial plain and low-slope morphologies, on soils that are moist and rich in organic matter and in areas with anthropic disturbance. On the basis of comparisons with the European context, the alliance Bryonio–Robinion described for the temperate territories of northern Italy is here validated.

The aim of this study is to provide new syntaxa for the Italian vegetation checklist. For the class Rhamno–Prunetea which includes the class Paliuretea the new alliance Rhamno saxatilis–Paliurion spinae-christi is described, that is included in the order Paliuretalia spinae-christi with a central-western Mediterranean and sub-Mediterranean distribution. Otherwise, the more thermophilous Paliurus spina-christi vegetation is included in the new suballiance named as Oleo sylvestris–Paliurenion spinae-christi within the alliance Oleo–Ceratonion of the class Quercetea ilicis. For the class Trifolio–Geranietea medii, a new alliance named Hyperico calabricae–Asphodelion macrocarpi is proposed here.
